HSU OLLI Course Offered at Sequoia Park Zoo—“The Zoo and You”
Changing Times, Changing Standards: the Development of Sequoia Park Zoo Over 100 YearsBill the chimpanzee

SEPTEMBER 21, 2012—Back by popular demand, Sequoia Park Zoo’s “The Zoo and You” course will once again feature in the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) program. Over the course of three weekly classes on October 5, 12, and 19, participants will travel through 100+ years in the life of Eureka’s beloved Zoo.

Starting with the Zoo’s humble beginnings in Sequoia Park in 1907, participants will discover how the Zoo has evolved over time, reflecting the changing standards and requirements of Zoos as well as the public’s perception of the role of zoos in society. They’ll learn what is involved with operating an accredited zoo in the 21st century through illustrated talks, behind-the-scenes tours, animal encounters, and a peek inside the master plan for the future of the Sequoia Park Zoo. Participants will also gain insight into the public-private partnership between the City of Eureka and the Sequoia Park Zoo Foundation. The course will be taught by Zoo Manager Gretchen Ziegler and Education Supervisor Amber Neilson.

“We’re delighted to be able to offer this course through OLLI again this year,” says Zoo Manager Gretchen Ziegler. “Community education is a key part of our mission, and it’s great to have the opportunity to provide insight into the role of modern accredited zoos in wildlife conservation, education and research.”
