Zoo Conservation Lecture 3/15

The Sequoia Park Zoo & Foundation are hosting their final conservation lecture of the season on Wednesday, March 15 at 7:00 PM as a hybrid event, offered both in-person and on Zoom. Stephanie Mietz and Sue Moore will present The Bayside Pollinator Project: Growing Native Plants, Educating Youth, and Building Community. The event begins with a Zoo update slideshow at 6:45 PM. The lecture starts promptly at 7:00 PM. Attendees are encouraged to ask the speakers questions after the presentation. The Conservation Lecture Series is sponsored by Papa & Barkley.

The Bayside Pollinator Project was originally funded through the Zoo’s Conservation Grant program in 2019. The Jacoby Creek Land Trust (JCLT) was awarded funds to develop educational programming, research, and workshop materials to support native pollinators by establishing native plants within our community. JCLT and the Jacoby Creek School Garden partnered and created multi-faceted educational programming for students that teaches the importance of native pollinators to our ecosystem and greater community.

Stephanie Mietz is the Executive Director (ED) of the Jacoby Creek Land Trust. She has extensive experience working in place-based nonprofit organizations in rural settings. Partnerships and pollinators are her passion. As ED for JCLT, Stephanie has been developing partnerships within the local community to restore and steward the land and water within the Jacoby Creek watershed. Stephanie earned her bachelor’s degree in History and Linguistics from the University of Michigan and completed her master’s degree at Northern Arizona University in Rural Geography. Sue Moore is the volunteer leader of the Jacoby Creek School Garden. A former classroom teacher and lecturer, the garden is now her outdoor education space. She lives in Bayside with her husband, dogs, and a flock of fowl.

The 2022-2023 Conservation Lecture Series will be held in-person and remotely through Zoom. The in-person lecture is located at the Sequoia Park Zoo’s Flamingo Room at 3414 W Street in Eureka, CA. Attendees can enter the Zoo through Gate C, located to the left of the main gate at the W Street crosswalk. To attend virtually, a free, registered Zoom account is required. The Zoom link will be available on the Zoo’s website at SequoiaParkZoo.net and through the Zoo’s social media.
